Best 6 berth caravan under 1500kg

Not long ago, I found myself in the predicament where I needed a 6 berth caravan but didn’t want to change my car. This necessitated choosing a 6 berth caravan weighing less than 1500kg, which is more challenging than it sounds! To help others currently facing this issue, I decided to create this blog post containing the best 6 berth caravans weighing less than 1500kg.

Here are the best 6 berth caravans under 1500kg:

  • Compass Casita 586 (2021)
  • Elddis Avante 586 (2021)
  • Lunar Venus Delux 620 (2019)

These caravans are lightweight and great options for different reasons. I’ll explain a bit more about each of the caravans above and give you a rough idea of what you should expect to pay.

The best 6 berth caravans under 1500kg

1500kg is a fairly low weight limit for a good 6 berth caravans. However, these 6 berth caravans are excellent caravans without even considering their low weight.

Starting with the Compass Casita 586, let’s have a closer look at each of these caravans.

Compass Casita 586 (2021)

The Compass Casita 586 is a beautiful, family-friendly 6 berth caravan. This is one of the best lightweight 6 berth caravans that you can purchase. Undeniably, features and accessories are often cut in lighter caravans to keep the weight down. But it doesn’t really feel like anything is missing in this caravan, making it the ideal tourer for a family.

Here are the pros and cons of the Casita 586.

Pros
  • Plenty of storage
  • Very flexible layout
  • Good kitchen
Cons

There are plenty of pros for this caravan and not much in the way cons – which is exactly what you want from the caravan. The only possible con I can think of is the size of the caravan, at just under 5.7m long and 2.2m wide. It feels a little on the small size and might not be comfortable for a family of 6 without an awning. Mind you, what do you expect for a 6 berth caravan weighing less than 1,500kg?!

Let’s have a look at the pros of this caravan in more detail.

    • Plenty of storage: There is plenty of storage within the Casita 586, with options for additional storage should you want them. At the rear of the caravan, there is a large wardrobe with plenty of space. The wardrobe has plenty of shelves as well as hanging space; perfect for the whole family to store clothing, or just the children considering it’s right next to the bunks. Under the nearside seating, there is a large storage space for big items. And you can pay extra to have external access to this and the space under the lower fixed bunk. Basically, there’s plenty of storage space for a family.
    • Very flexible layout: The layout is perhaps the most flexible you will find in a 6 berth caravan. This is the perfect layout for a family with young children or teenagers. At the front of the caravan, you have a large lounge area. This can be a sizeable double bed or it can be used as two singles. The side dinette can be used as one single or converted into bunk beds. At the rear of the caravan, you have the fixed bunk beds. This is a very flexible, family-friendly layout.
    • Good kitchen: There are often a lot of cutbacks in the kitchen where lightweight caravans are concerned. Fortunately, there aren’t really any cutbacks here, other than the relatively small fridge. I would argue that this kitchen is rather good considering the size and weight of the caravan. The kitchen contains a full oven and girl, four-burner hob, microwave, fridge, and plenty of worktop space. Furthermore, there’s plenty of storage in the shape of 3 drawers, a deep cupboard, and overhead lockers.

This is definitely one of my favourite lightweight 6 berth caravans. According to Elddis.co.uk, this caravan costs approximately £21,774. That figure includes delivery, registration and PDI charges.

    Elddis Avante 586 (2021)

The main lounge area in the Avante 586. The interior of this caravan is beautiful and it feels quite spacious. This is helped by the large front windows and the sunroof, which comes as standard. Image: Elddis.co.uk

The Elddis Avante 586 is a beautiful 6 berth caravan with a very family-friendly layout. In fact, the layout is remarkably similar to the Casita 586, which is probably why this is also one of the best lightweight 6 berth caravans available.

Here are the pros and cons of the Elddis Avante 586.

    Pros
    • Spacious, well-lit lounge
    • Plenty of storage
    • Flexible layout

But for such as lightweight caravan, you really can’t go wrong.

      • Spacious, well-lit lounge: One of my favourite features of this caravan is the spacious, well-lit lounge. The front lounge is large enough for 6 to sit comfortable, particularly when you consider that this is a caravan designed for a family with younger children. There’s the large front windows but also the sunroof, which comes as standard in this model. Both ensure that the lounge area is well-lit throughout the day, with plenty of lighting for night time too.
      • Plenty of storage: This caravan has plenty of storage, with numerous overhead lockers and under-seat storage at the front, more overhead lockers above the dinette, and a large wardrobe at the rear. Furthermore, you have a large storage space under the fixed bunks at the rear. There’s plenty of storage for all your holiday essentials, such as clothing and board games, as well as larger items.
      • Flexible layout: The layout of the Avante 586 is very family-friendly, because of the flexibility of the sleeping arrangements. At the front of the caravan, the lounge area can convert into a large double. Alternatively, the sofas can be used as two single beds. The side dinette can become a single or bunk beds. Further along the caravan, you have the fixed bunks. It goes without saying that this is a fantastic layout for a family.

The only possible con of this caravan is the washroom, which is a little on the small side. But in a caravan of this size, cutbacks had to be made somewhere. Having the large cupboard next to the washroom more than makes up for it in my opinion. Consider the fact that you’ll probably use site facilities more often than not anyway and then it really doesn’t matter.

      Lunar Venus 620 (2019)

The Lunar Venus 620 is a great family-friendly 6 berth caravan. Obviously this is a lightweight unit, but its eye-catching interior makes it one of the best. Furthermore, there’s a reason this is one of my favourite lightweight 6 berths in terms of features.

I have chosen the Lunar Venus 620/6 as the best lightweight caravan in terms of features. There is something that really sets this caravan apart from its lightweight, budget competitors: it has a fixed double bed.

Let’s have a look at some of the other pros and cons of this model:

      Pros
      • Sizeable lounge
      • Stylish interior
      • Fixed double
      Cons
      • Small washroom
      • Sizeable lounge: The Lunar Venus 620 has a sizeable lounge area with a capacious dining table, particularly when you consider the size of the caravan. 6 can comfortably sit in the main lounge area, but there’s the side dinette which gives you much more space should you need it. It’s easy for generations to sit separately in a caravan such as this, with children at the side dinette and adults in the main lounge, for example.
      • Stylish interior: In terms of visual appeal, this is one of the most gorgeous and eye-catching entry-level, lightweight 6 berths out there. There’s a stunning dark wood finish throughout that makes this caravan a very stylish, modern option. The Lunar Venus is Lunar’s entry-level line, but the 620 feels premium because of the beautiful interior. The cream and the dark wood appearance go very well together. It also helps that the caravan is well-lit due to a large front window and Skyview roof light.
      • Fixed double: The fixed double is an excellent feature of this caravan because it’s something that a lot of smaller 6 berth caravans miss out on. As far as I’m concerned, a fixed double bed in a caravan really is a must to avoid the hassle of making up the lounge every single night. It also, means you have 4 separate beds throughout the rest of the caravan; the bunks the dinette converts into and two singles at the front should you use the sofas as two separate beds (for older children and teenagers perhaps, considering they’re 1.9m long).

The biggest complaint here is a smallish washroom, which is a common complaint in smaller 6 berth caravans. The truth of the matter is the washroom is often the area that suffers when compromises are made to keep the weight of a caravan down. And it really does make sense, considering how much more you use everything else in the caravan.
