What Is The Average Cost Of Caravan Insurance?

We all know how essential caravan insurance is, even if we don’t legally need it. But how much is caravan insurance going to cost you?

Touring caravan insurance premiums range from £90 – £500 annually, averaging at £194.85 according to our research. The premiums vary due to factors including the value of the caravan, where you are storing it, and how secure it is.

To ascertain the cost of touring caravan insurance cover, I decided to get caravan insurance quotes for 3 caravans (one lower range, one mid-range, and one top-range) and see how expensive the insurance was. Keep reading to find out how much caravan insurance will potentially cost you.

How Much Does Caravan Insurance Cost? Comparison

To give a good idea of how much caravan insurance costs, I got caravan insurance quotes for 3 caravans:

  • Bailey Discovery D4-2 (2020 model) – £16,199
  • Elddis Avante 646 (2010 model) – £11,995
  • Coachman VIP 575 (2015 model) – £18,500

The Bailey Discovery D4-2 is an affordable 2-berth entry-level caravan. The Elddis Avante 646 is a mid-range 6-berth caravan, whereas the Coachman VIP 575 is an upmarket 4-berth unit. As you can tell, I’ve picked out a varied selection of caravans so we aren’t just comparing touring units of a similar specification and size.

So let’s start off with the Bailey Discovery D4-2 by getting some quotes.

Entry-Level Caravan Insurance Cost

I’ve picked out the Bailey Discovery D4-2 as the entry-level caravan for this insurance cost comparison. It’s a stylish caravan with some good features, but much cheaper than some of the caravans out there. I found the 2020 Bailey Discovery D4-2 available for £16,199.

The Discovery D4-2 is a great first tourer for people looking to purchase their first caravan, so I thought it was a suitable option for this comparison. It has everything you need, including a kitchen, bathroom, and spacious seating area, but not much else. So how much is insurance going to cost?

Bailey D4-2 2020 Model Insurance Cost

InsurerPremium Cost (Annual)Legal Assistance?Breakdown Cover?EU Cover?
Insurer #1£210.67Optional - £15 extraNoYes
Insurer #2£213.78Optional - £10 extraOptional - £56 extraNo
Insurer #3£221.12YesOptional - £65 extraYes

So as you can see, the cheapest insurance offer is £210.67. This is market-value cover, and it includes EU cover (cover for towing in the UK and European countries).

The most expensive option is £221.12. This is also market-value cover. Additionally, it includes Legal Assistance (at least £50,000 of legal expenses cover if you have to take legal action as a result of an accident that wasn’t your fault) and EU cover.

The best option here when considering comprehensiveness is the policy available with insurer #3. This does cost a little more, but it also offers more protection.

There are plenty of factors that affect caravan insurance premiums, such as the age of the caravan, where you’ll be storing it, and your driving experience. You could get a quote for the same caravan and get a cheaper or more expensive premium, simply due to your personal circumstances. However, this quote comparison gives you a roundabout figure for how much you should expect your premium to be.

Mid-Range Caravan Insurance Cost

I’ve picked out the Eldiss Avante 646 caravan as the mid-range model for this comparison. Although this is a mid-range caravan, I’ve picked out an older model (2010) to give us a better idea of how the age of a caravan affects the insurance premium. Again, this is a spacious, stylish caravan with some excellent features. I found the Eldiss Avante 646 caravan available for £11,995.

This is an ideal caravan for families looking to purchase their first caravan, or perhaps families looking to upgrade to a caravan with a greater specification than their current one. Available for just under £12,000, it’s affordable compared to newer mid-range caravans. It’s the type of unit many are likely to go for, so it’s an ideal model and age for this comparison. So let’s take a look at how much insurance is going to cost.

InsurerPremium Cost (Annual)Legal Assistance?Breakdown Cover?EU Cover?
Insurer #1£131.71Optional - £15 extraNoYes
Insurer #2£161.36YesOptional - £65 extraYes
Insurer #3£161.77Optional - £11.34 extraNoYes

The cheapest option here is £131.71. This is market-value cover, and it includes EU cover. EU cover protects you when you are towing in the UK and Europe. Furthermore, you can include legal assistance for an extra £15.

The most expensive option is £161.77. This is also market-value cover, and it includes EU cover. With this policy, legal assistance is an optional extra priced at £11.34. It’s worth mentioning that breakdown cover isn’t an option at all with this insurer.

If I had to choose one of these insurance policies, I would say insurer #2 offers best value for money. It’s slightly cheaper than insurer than #3 and not much more than #1, but includes legal assistance and EU cover as standard. In addition, you can include breakdown cover in your policy for a further charge of £65.

Despite being, arguably, a much better caravan than the Bailey Discovery D4-2, it’s cheaper to insure the Eldiss Avante 646 due to numerous factors:

  • The caravan’s age
  • It’s current market value

Upmarket Caravan Insurance Cost

I’ve chosen the Coachman VIP 575 caravan for this upmarket caravan insurance premium comparison. The VIP 575 is a beautiful 4 berth caravan. It’s the perfect option for small families looking to buy a premium caravan. Again, I have picked out a second-hand model for this comparison that’s a few years old (2015). I found the Coachman VIP 575 for £18,500. Compared to caravans much newer, it still remains a fairly expensive caravan.

An image of a Coachman VIP 575’s interior. This caravan has a beautiful interior, which you’d expect of a caravan costing nearly £30,000 brand new! Image: Autotrader.co.uk

This a great caravan for small families looking to purchase an upmarket caravan. I chose a second-hand VIP 575 for this comparison because I think people are more likely to choose one a few years old, rather than purchasing a brand new one. A brand new Coachman VIP 575 currently costs around £30,000, so even people looking at upmarket caravans are likely to go for a second hand one in my opinion.

Anyway, let’s get on and take a look at how much insurance is going to cost.

Coachman VIP 575 2015 Model Insurance Cost

InsurerPremium Cost (Annual)Legal Assistance?Breakdown Cover?EU Cover?
Insurer #1£242.18Optional - £10 extraOptional - £56 extraNo
Insurer #2£253.20YesOptional - £65 extraYes
Insurer #3£266.63Optional - £10 extraNoYes

The cheapest of these insurance policies is £242.18. This is a market-value policy and doesn’t include any extras, such as legal assistance. As you can see on the table above, you can add extras and pay more if you want to.

The most expensive of these insurance policies is £266.63. Again, this is a market-value policy and also covers you for towing in European countries thanks to the EU cover extra.

The policy by insurer #2 is best value for money here. This policy includes the legal assistance and EU cover extras as standard, so is the most comprehensive option. If you’re spending £18,500 on a caravan, you need to make sure you choose a suitable policy to protect your investment. This is the only suitable policy out of those compared above, in my opinion.

As we can see, these insurance policies cost more than the previous two caravans. This is likely due to the Coachman VIP 575’s value, despite the fact it is older than the Bailey Discovery D4-2.

What Factors Affect The Cost Of Caravan Insurance?

As I already mentioned, you could own any of the caravans above and get cheaper or more expensive premiums than those I was offered. These quotes are just to give you a rough idea of what your caravan insurance premium will be.

The price of caravan insurance can depend on a variety of factors, such as:

  • The age of your caravan: The age of your caravan will usually have an affect on how much you pay for insurance. In most cases, the older the caravan, the cheaper the insurance when compared with newer equivalents. This is because newer caravans are worth more.
  • The value of the caravan: This one’s pretty obvious, but caravans with a high market value will cost more to insure than caravans with a low market value. With all insurance, the greater the value of your asset, the more you’ll pay so this should come as no surprise.
  • Where you’re storing your caravan: Where you intend to store your caravan will have a big impact on the insurance premium you are offered. If you’re storing your caravan in a secure facility, you will pay less than someone storing their caravan on the side of the road.
  • The caravan’s security features: The more secure your caravan is, the cheaper your insurance generally. For example, insurance for a caravan with an immobiliser and tracker fitted will be less than insurance for an equivalent caravan with neither.

So depending on your particular circumstances, your insurance may be cheaper or more expensive. However, these quotes give you a rough idea of what you can expect to pay annually for your caravan insurance.
