Which Folding Campers Come With Toilets?

We all know how important a toilet is for comfort when camping. Most campsites will have toilet facilities, but do you really want to be leaving your folding camper at 3 am to go to the communal toilets? I certainly don’t!

Before purchasing a folding camper, I researched which folding campers had toilets and which didn’t. If you want a toilet in your folding camper, I’ve written this blog post for people like you.

Which folding campers come with toilets? Here’s a selection of folding campers that come with toilets:

  • Conway Crusader
  • Pennine Pathfinder
  • Trigano Randger 575 TC
  • Pennine Sovereign
  • Pennine Pentium
  • Conway Cardinal
  • Trigano Randger 575 TLX
  • Raclet Tamaris

Don’t have a six-berth folding camper with a cassette toilet? It’s not the end of the world. There are several high-quality portable toilets available that you can rely on. I’ve taken a look at a few and answered some questions that crop up time and time again about portable toilets below.

Do Only Larger Folding Campers Have Toilets?

In my research, I have found that only the larger folding campers tend to have toilets. For example, the Conway Crusader, Pennine Pathfinder, and Trigano Randger 575 TC are all six berth folding campers.

Most 6-berth folding campers have a cassette toilet, but none of the smaller folding campers do. Fortunately, there are several high-quality portable toilets available, perfect for storing and using in your folding camper.

How Much Do Portable Folding Camper Toilets Cost?

Portable toilets for folding campers are fairly inexpensive, depending on the model that you choose. Prices tend to range from £35 to £150. You can get a portable toilet for cheaper than £35, but the quality isn’t always the best with cheaper products.

You must consider the costs of maintaining and using your portable toilet too. To keep your toilet working correctly and in good condition, you will need cleaning products. Most portable toilets come with the cleaning products you need initially, but these will run out.

You also need to consider what you’ll pay for waste management products. Again, most portable toilets come with ‘tester’ toilet fluid. These won’t last long, so it’s worth investing in more products before you begin travelling.

You can buy waste management products on e-commerce, camping and outdoors websites. The products are usually sold by the manufacturer of your toilet, although there are third-party toilet fluids and bowl cleaners available that do the job just as good.

Do Portable Toilets Smell?

This is a big concern when using a portable toilet – especially when you’re storing and using the portable toilet in your folding camper or in the awning!

In my experience, portable toilets do not smell when using deodorising chemicals. While emptying a toilet is never going to be the most enjoyable of experiences, you don’t have to worry about the smell.

How do portable toilets not smell? Most portable toilets come with deodorising chemicals. Manufacturers design these chemicals with odour control in mind, meaning you won’t have to deal with nasty smells when emptying your portable toilet.

With products such as Thetford Aqua Kem Blue toilet fluid (available here on Camping World) you can make a truly horrible task much more pleasant. No one wants to empty the portable toilet, but it’s not as horrible when you use a product such as this.

How Do You Empty A Portable Toilet?

Emptying a portable chemical toilet is incredibly easy. First things first, follow the manufacturer’s guidance for removing the waste storage unit from your portable toilet. Follow the manufacturer’s guidance on removing the cassette to the letter, if you can. That way, you can make sure you stay safe!

Once you arrive at the disposal point with your waste, open the cap of the waste storage unit and very carefully pour the contents into the disposal point. Afterwards, take time to rinse the storage unit with water, if possible, before a more comprehensive clean when the opportunity arises.

Emptying the portable toilet is surprisingly not as awful as you might presume. I found that my portable toilet didn’t smell at all when emptying it, thanks to the deodorising chemicals used in the toilet.

Once you return to your folding camper, add the necessary chemicals to the waste storage unit again. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to restore your toilet operating condition, and you’re good to go!

Which Portable Toilet Should I Choose?

Frankly, you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to portable toilets. There are literally hundreds of options, although not all of them are good. When adventuring in my folding camper, I’ve had ample opportunity to test out numerous portable toilets. While some were great, I’ve had the unfortunate pleasure of using many poor portable toilets!

As part of my research for this blog post, I took the opportunity to test several portable toilets. All the toilets I tried had excellent reviews on Amazon but vary greatly in price.

My favourite portable toilet was the Thetford Porta Potti 365, priced at £99.99 at the time of writing. This portable toilet feels premium, despite the mid-range price. One of my favourite features is the level indicator for the waste-holding tank. When it’s time to empty the waste storage unit, you’ll know thanks to this indicator.

As I may have mentioned once or twice throughout this blog post, I dread emptying portable toilets. However, emptying the Thetford Porta Potti 365 wasn’t unpleasant in the slightest. It was as simple as opening the cap, pressing the button, releasing, and then pouring. There were absolutely no horrible smells to deal with – a testament to how effective the chemicals shipped with this Porta Potti are.

All folding camper owners keep a keen eye on the weight of their folding camper to ensure it doesn’t end up over-encumbered. This Porta Potti’s net weight is 4kg. It’s a perfect lightweight solution for storing in your folding camper permanently.

Although this might be obvious, the Porta Potti is heavy when the waste tank is full! While testing this toilet, I emptied it often – not just when it was full. It’s worth noting I’m not a 20-year-old gym enthusiast, however. If you are, you might find it doesn’t feel heavy at all!

The Thetford Porta Potti isn’t just for experienced campers or folding camper lovers. If you’re a novice, it’s the perfect portable toilet for you! It comes with highly detailed, clear instructions and is extremely easy to use.

Other Highly-Rated Portable Toilets

Although there’s no dispute over which portable toilet is my family and I’s favourite, there are several other reliable portable toilets available.

A close runner-up for a favourite portable toilet is the Dometic SaniPottie 966. This easy-to-clean portable toilet is perfectly convenient and ideal for storing in your folding camper. At the time of writing, the price is £94.33. Slightly more cost-effective than the Thetford Porta Potti with similar functions, this is ideal if you’re not bothered about advanced functions like the Porta Potti’s level indicator for the waste-holding tank.

If you don’t use your folding camper an awful lot, you might be unable to justify buying the Porta Potti 365 or the SaniPottie 966. If that is the case, there are more cost-effective options out there, such as this BRANQ portable toilet.

This toilet isn’t one I’d use permanently because I travel a lot. I prefer something more luxurious if I’m going to use it often. However, I can’t deny that it does the job. It’s ideal for folding camper owners who want a cheap, reliable portable toilet that they’ll use once or twice a year. It’s also very lightweight, so perfect for the elderly and camping trips where weight is an issue.

I would describe this portable toilet as a glorified bucket if I’m completely honest. However, I would like to reiterate the fact that it does the job. Isn’t that all you really need from a portable toilet?

Conclusion

To conclude this post, it doesn’t really matter if your folding camper has a toilet. There are literally hundreds of reliable portable toilets available.

My folding camper doesn’t have a toilet, but it’s not a big deal. A portable toilet is perfect for early mornings and late nights when you don’t want to walk to the communal toilets.
