Which Is The Lightest 2 Berth Caravan?

With literally hundreds of caravans out there, it can be difficult to find the information you need when you’re thinking about purchasing one. Plenty of couples want a light caravan that’s easy to manoeuvre at home and on-site, as well as at home. So, which is the lightest 2 berth caravan?

The Freedom Microlite Discovery is the lightest 2 berth caravan currently available. The Freedom Microlite Discovery has an empty weight of just 600kg and a fully laden weight of 750kg.

The Freedom Microlite Discovery is the lightest model currently available. However, it might not be the perfect lightweight caravan for you. There are a wide range of caravans out there aimed at people wanting to purchase a lightweight unit. Let’s take a look at some of them in this blog post.

The Lightest 2 Berth Caravans Currently Available

While researching this blog post, I took a look at all the main caravan manufacturers to find out which 2 berth caravans are the lightest.

If you aren’t bothered about having a lot of space and simply want a lightweight unit, here are some of the lightest caravans available today.

In the next section of this post, I’m going to take a closer look at these caravans. I’ll explain what facilities you’ll find in each unit, how spacious they are, and if you’re making any sacrifices compared to choosing a heavier caravan.

Freedom Microlite Discovery

The Microlite Discovery is a well-equipped pop-top caravan. Inside a Microlite Discovery, you will find:

  • Spacious seating area (converts into a double bed)
  • Kitchen area
  • Washroom
  • Wardrobe

During my research, I have seen the Freedom Microlite Discovery referred to as a TARDIS-like caravan time and time again. It’s easy to see why, as manufacturer Freedom have managed to pack a lot into the relatively small body of this model.

The most important feature is the spacious seating area that also converts into a double bed. The bed is 125 centimetres wide and 185 centimetres long. As far as double beds go, this is fairly small. However, that’s obviously a sacrifice that you make when you go for a compact, lightweight caravan.

The Microlite Discovery’s kitchen is impressive for a caravan of its size and weight. The kitchen has a 3-way fridge, 2-burner hob, and a sink. The sink and hob have lids, which you can use to maximise your worktop space as needed. This model utilises the space available impressively considering the body size of the unit.

Freedom have also managed to cram a small washroom with cassette toilet and tip-up sink into the Microlite Discovery’s small body. Other than the lack of shower facilities, the Microlite really is the ideal unit for couples looking to purchase their first lightweight caravan.

To top it all off, the Microlite Discovery currently starts at £11,495, which is a brilliant price for a 2 berth caravan. There are optional extras, such as a chassis upgrade, available but this caravan is the ideal starting point for one person or a couple looking to purchase their first caravan.

Freedom Sunstream

The Freedom Sunstream. This model is one of the lightest 2 berth caravans available. Image: Freedom

The Freedom Sunstream is one of the lightest 2 berth caravans available. Compared with the Microlite Discovery, it is aimed at people who intend to spend all their time at caravan sites.

Here’s everything that you will find in a Sunstream:

  • Spacious seating area (converts into single beds)
  • Kitchen
  • Cupboard space
  • Overhead storage

The Sunstream is unique when compared with the vast majority of 2 berth caravans. In most 2 berth caravans, the seating area converts into a double bed. In the Sunstream, the seating area converts into two single beds. Depending on your sleeping requirements, this is a key selling point of the Sunstream.

The Sunstream has a relatively large kitchen, which boasts a greater equipment level than most caravans of this size. The kitchen has:

  • Full oven and grill
  • 2-burner hob
  • Three way fridge (with freezer compartment)
  • Sink
  • Worktop area

The sink and hob have glass covers that fold down to provide additional worktop space as required. This kitchen is quite impressive when you consider the size of the caravan and how lightweight it is.

The Sunstream has plenty of room to store your belongings. As well as plenty of cupboard space, there is under seating storage as well as overhead storage.

The Freedom Sunstream starts at £11,495, so it’s an ideal entry point for someone looking to purchase their first caravan.

Freedom Jetstream First Class/Jetstream Twin Sport

The Freedom Jetstream Twin Sport and Jetstream First Class are virtually identical models. The main difference is the Jetstream Twin Sport’s seating area can convert into two single beds or one king size bed. The Jetstream First Class’s seating area can only convert into a kingsize bed.

Here’s what you’ll find in both:

  • Spacious seating (convertible into bed(s))
  • Heating system
  • Kitchen
  • Bathroom
  • Storage

As I mentioned before, the Jetstream is the more versatile of the two caravans. But otherwise, the models are virtually identical.

These caravan models have heating as well as hot water, thanks to a Truma Combi heating system. The Truma Combi interface allows you to control the temperature of your hot water as well as the hot air. The Truma Combi is very impressive, as it can be managed from a smartphone as well as the wall interface.

Moving onto the kitchen, a lot of appliances are crammed into this small space. The kitchen contains:

  • Full oven and grill
  • 2-burner hob
  • 3-way fridge
  • Sink

With all these appliances, you really do have everything you need for longer stays away from home.

Both models have a bathroom, which is truly unique in caravans of this size and weight. The bathroom contains a toilet, tip-up sink, and a shower. Obviously this isn’t the most spacious of bathrooms, but it gives you the flexibility to go anywhere you want to in your caravan as long as you have water and gas and electric hookups.

As with all the other Freedom caravans, space is utilised well with overhead storage as well as under seating storage. That’s without mentioning the cupboard next to the bathroom, either.

The Jetstream Twin Sport and First Class both start at £13,995.

Caravelair Antares 335

The Caravelair Antares 335 is a 2-berth caravan. You don’t often see Antares 335s, and they’re quite expensive to purchase brand new (they start at approximately £18,000).

Here’s what you’ll find in a Antares 335:

  • Spacious seating area (converts into a large kingsize bed)
  • Kitchen
  • Bathroom
  • Storage

First, it’s important to explain how luxurious the Antares range is. The Freedom caravans are cheaper, but more basic in my opinion. The Antares 335 has a nicer appearance and really seems luxurious compared to some other caravans of a similar size.

The kitchen in the Antares 335 has plenty of appliances. In this model, you will find everything that you require for many comfortable, lengthly holidays. Here’s what you’ll find:

  • Oven/grill combination
  • 3-burner hob
  • Sink
  • 3 way fridge
  • Workspace area

The appliances in the Antares 335 are very similar to what you would find in the Freedom caravans. However, I would argue that the Antares 335 appliances are more premium, while the kitchen area in general seems larger. It’s worth noting that the fridge is 85-litre, so larger than you’d find in any Freedom caravan.

The bathroom is where the Antares sets itself apart from it’s similarly-sized competition. In the 335, you will find a light as well as a roof vent – features that are surprisingly missing from more expensive caravans. In addition, there is a shower, a toilet, and a basin. Also, there is a cupboard under the wash basin which is missing in many competitor caravans.

You’ll also find plenty of storage in the Antares 335, including cupboards and under seating storage. You can even access the under-seat lockers externally, which is rather unique to say the least.

Bailey Discovery D4-2

The Bailey Discovery D4-2 is a luxurious yet lightweight 2-berth caravan. The Bailey is perfect for a couple looking for a lightweight unit that’s easy to tow, but I wouldn’t say it is an entry-level caravan. After all, it is more expensive than a lot of caravans this size (the model starts at approximately £16,199).

In the Discovery D4-2, you will find:

  • A spacious seating area (coverts into a large kingsize bed)
  • Kitchen
  • Bathroom
  • Plenty of cupboard space/storage

The interior of the Discovery D4-2 is very roomy. It’s certainly large enough for a couple. Because of the windows on this model, you’re also assured a beautiful view no matter where you are stopping. The seating area converts into a rather spacious, comfortable kingsize bed.

The Discovery D4-2 kitchen has all the that you could ever need:

  • Oven/grill combination
  • 3-burner hob
  • 103 litre fridge
  • Sink
  • Overhead cupboard space

The Discovery D4-2 has a larger kitchen area than the other caravans mentioned in this blog post. As well as the main kitchen area, where the oven/grill combination and sink are, there is an additional workspace area before that the fridge is stored underneath. This model has a large fridge, larger than the fridges in any of the other models mentioned in this blog post.

The bathroom of the D4-2 is rather unique compared to the other caravans I’ve discussed in this post. It takes up a corner, rather than a little area next to the kitchen. This means it is larger than most of other small caravan bathrooms, which is ideal. The bathroom in this model is certainly more comfortable in comparison even though it is only ever so slightly larger.

The D4-2 also has plenty of storage, in the form of one large cupboard, under seat storage and plenty of overhead lockers. The kitchen in particular is well-equipped, with several lockers above the fridge and the cooking area, perfect for storing cutlery and utensils, as well as ingredients and so on.
